When you see a claim that contains an easily recognizable error, it is good form to not be the first to comment or vote on it, thus allowing the author to retract and correct.

I think visible edits to fix typos (even after votes are cast) should be allowed, with some kind of history function like Wikipedia has. Blatant backpedaling in high profile claims would be caught and ridiculed in other claims, however.

In the limit as the number of claims approaches infinity, the cost of any one error becomes vanishingly small.
