The San Francisco Bay Area has less advanced and more expensive residential broadband options than the Portland, Oregon area.

By 7 Ryan Grove on April 12, 2007

Many communities in the Portland area can get Verizon FiOS, which offers connection speeds of 15Mbps/2Mbps for $50 a month. Where FiOS isn't yet available, Comcast offers connection speeds of 12Mbps/768Kbps for around $65 a month.

Compare that to the San Francisco Bay Area, where FiOS isn't yet available and where Comcast only offers 6Mbps/384Kbps for $65 a month, and the only alternatives are DSL and wireless providers that charge as much or more for the same or slower speeds.

What gives? Isn't the Silicon Valley a prime market for high-bandwidth residential broadband? Why are there so few options?

Ouch! Ryan, you're paying too much. You know you can get the cable modem without paying for cable, right? My household (in the east bay) only pays around 40$ a month.

Comcast's pricing is a little weird. Basically, it's $33 a month for the first 6 months ($56.95 thereafter) for their low-speed plan with no cable TV, or $66.95 a month for their high speed plan (no introductory pricing).

Are you sure you're not in the introductory period of the low-speed plan?

Hmm. I'll have to ask Nicole Monkey. We haven't been at the new place six months yet, so it's possible.

Some reseller like http://www.comcastoffers.com/ seems to offer a better deal. I've used it without problems. Make sure you save and print the all rebate forms asap, as it could be a hassle when you try to get them later.

I recently learned about Verizon providing FiOS in areas around Portland. Apparently Verizon's negotiations with Portland itself aren't moving along well, but if you live in a suburb you're good to go. Yay for fiber terminating in your own home. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verizon_FiOS

It's also MUCH larger and a lot older. Apples and oranges.
