Back in the day ('99 or so), I used to play lots of StarCraft virtualized under VMWare — and in those days, VMWare had a much more painful performance hit. For games where the VM performance hit is just too much, there's also Wine and its derivatives, which are much faster (at the cost of not always being as compatible).
