Back in the day ('99 or so), I used to play lots of StarCraft virtualized under VMWare — and in those days, VMWare had a much more painful performance hit. For games where the VM performance hit is just too much, there's also Wine and its derivatives, which are much faster (at the cost of not always being as compatible).

Disagreed, but only because I run it virtualized on a Mac.
The right place to run Windows is in the trash ...
Why would you run Windows in the first place?
For games virtualized Windows is slow, isn't it? And why run it if not for games??
