The overall ecological viability of the planet Earth (i.e. its ability to host sustainably an abundance of life forms) is in a state of decline.

I should've stated this premise first, apparently.

As is consistent with the laws of thermodynamics. Entropy of an isolated system (e.g. Earth) always increases. This means that the system spontaneously runs down. All available energy is used up, all concentrations of matter are evenly dissipated, all gradients disappear. Eventually, there is no potential for further useful work— the system becomes totally degraded and disordered until it reaches equilibrium- complete entropic decay...death.
