Depends on the lab's purpose, physical controls, ...
* Lab dedicated to computer security, where hardening of machines is a task...
* Lab with restrictive physical access limited to responsible users with a common purpose...
* Lab where the machines are frequently ghosted, and network access is unrestricted anyways (e.g. what's the difference between this and you bringing in a laptop?)...
* Lab computers that have no writable disks and are using Knoppix/live CD distribution of choice...
I'll agree with the general principle though not with the claim.

Everyone should have root access.
You first though.

To be more general, you mentioned a school. Schools are about education, and who knows what will be of educational value.
If you were going to put that lab at my place of work, I would laugh and laugh and laugh. There might be tears. Tears of laughter.
