The large flow of migrants provides a relief valve for pressure to change an unjust Mexican society – as recently demonstrated in Oaxaca. It also provides the necessary growth to maintain the capitalist economic system – which is increasingly characterized by great disparity of wealth.

It was particularly telling when Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the left-wing candidate for President of Mexico campaigned to reduce emigration from his country, while the right-wing candidate did not. Obrador knows quite well that keeping malcontented people within Mexico is crucial for reforming or overthrowing the current political power structure in his country.
