I definitely agree.. Nightmare before Christmas wouldn't have been nearly as wonderful if it had been anything but stop motion. And even in adult film, I have not seen anything nearly as compelling, frightening, or beautiful as Jan Svankmajer work in Alice and Little Otik. Stop motion can say so much that other film techniques cannot.

Laika (formerly Vinton Studios) is currently working on a stop-motion version of Coraline, by Neil Gaiman. I hope it's good.

How can a technique be known as the an art form. An art form is normally assessed in quality by the amount of stimulation it brings about. The impact it has on people, the number of people that can relate to it, the degree of their appreciation, and the effect or influence it has or has had in the past, all accumulate to the 'degree of art.' Most art forms that are widely considered to be "masterpieces" possess these attributes. I think that would be similar to making a statement such as, "photoshop is an underrated art form". Something can only be known as an art form if it is used within an art movement.
