Religion is a perfect example of evolutionary success.

Like creatures that had adapted so well to their environment that they show no further changes over long periods of time, the successful religious ideas seem so well adapted to the human brain that they are resistant to change.
They might have gone one step further and reversed the cause and effect in a way that they actually control their environment (i.e. hosting brain) to make it immune to external information that carries unfavorable contradiction or paradox.

if evolution the through-line of progress than it will by things like religions that are the next step, not individual people, so i'm already on board
