For instance, a list of each person who is top in any category of the user rankings measured over all time, the past week, and the past day.
No need for labels as to why they're there, and no need for duplication. Rachel is top commenter of all time and the past week, and top voter today, but we still see her only once -- that sort of thing.
I think it would be rewarding enough for newcomers to enjoy without encouraging claim-spam so much. It also rewards long, slow faithful service such as Robert Mark White's incredible sustained vote rate, which I feel deserves some recognition.

This could be organized on a special ("Hall of Fame") page. To see such rewardings on each claims list page - is a waste of workspace.
how is it any more of a waste of space than the current "top claimants"?
I think a hall of fame page is a great idea.

any *static* information - not changing during the session of user work - is a waste of space. Why should I see the same info tens of times in one session?
OK... that doesn't make this any more or less of a waste of space than what I asked you to compare it to, then.
"Today's Top Claimants" - is NOT static (on day time scale); "Tags" panel - is.
that's nice, icvan, but does not address the idea i proposed, which is not necessarily static on a day time scale.
which you'd have known, had you actually read the proposal.
The only reason I'm disagreeing is that I don't see why the two ideas can't coexist.
well, in a sense they would in that the idea outlined above includes top claimants, but the point was that the idea outlined above would replace the current top claimants list.
That makes sense now.
