Rachel 's Beginner's Guide to Jyte should say more about tagging and the tag police.

By 10 Jonathan Rascher on June 02, 2007

It appears that many Jyte users have trouble with tagging. This is particularly true with new users, but I think it affects everyone to an extent. (I've been here since February and I still have trouble picking tags.)

Also, new users seem to easily misunderstand the tag police. (See this claim for one example.) I think part of the problem is that the name seems to imply a group of official moderators, not just a bunch of users making friendly suggestions. Of course, it's probably too late to change the name now.

I think it would help a lot if there was a mini-FAQ on the tag system and its associated culture somewhere, and Rachel's guide seems like the best place for it. The current version (at the time this claim was posted) doesn't say much about tagging.

Now, I understand that there is no One True Tagging Standard at the moment. (In fact, I think that's a good thing.) However, even something as simple as a list of a few different tagging styles and some tips on what is likely to be considered relevant could make a world of difference.

Why not, Zeb?

Well, proper tagging and why it it's important is one thing, but to have a particular group be advocated by what in a perfect world would be an otherwise neutral guide seems improper.

But he didn't say it should advocate them; explaining the terms on which they operate is relevant to the new user and not necessarily advocacy. The mention could just be "There are people known as tag police. They have no power, and are not making demands. They are called police as a sort of a joke; all they do is request tags they think would be relevant, and you are free to ignore them."

I think it would cause fewer hard feelings.

Yeah, something like what Vynce said is what I was going for.

Yeah.... I need time to work on it. It needs many improvements. But I'm trying to mine for ore to build D'Arch a spaceship. They say that the way to a man's heart is to build him a spaceship.

Rachel hope you don't mind : I felt very excited by your guide and decided to translate it on a personal and hidden wiki. Would you give the authorization to make it known in order to encourage french users to join Jyte ?

Oh sure :) The only issue I have is that it needs a lot of work as it is incomplete, and Jyte changes a lot. So, your translation is going to get outdated quickly, most likely, as my guide tends to do that itself. But it's probably better than not having it translated at all, and if you can go through and clean it up now and then for changes, it'd be good. My current notes for what I need to add into my guide are:

claim retraction
links bottom page
userid search
ignoring people

Just to give you an idea.
