Past-tense claims should be in the imperfect tense unless they refer to specific past events.

Imperfect
I have played a musical instrument.

Past Perfect:
I played a musical instrument when I was in college.

Past Perfect:
I was at the last Hüsker Dü show.

Imperfect
I have seen Hüsker Dü in concert.
