Fair enough; they're certainly different claims. I think too many people, physicists included, mix up the useful assumption of elegance with a belief in elegance. I prefer not to have an opinion on your question, which makes me wonder in retrospect why I voted. ;)
If elegance is experienced we must accept the fundamental workings of the universe allow this to be so. This is elegant itself, that refined to a point such a thing would occur.
In order to claim that something is not we must have experience of what it means for that thing to be what it is not and we must have experience of both the thing we are claiming it is not and what we are therefore claiming it to be.
in the begining was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God ... through Him all things were made and without him was not anything made that was made ... for from Him, and through Him, and to Him are all things.

They should feel guilty. Every extra belief we bring with us when we do science undermines the work.
