As someone who tends to rest his little finger and thumb on the table when using a mouse, I much prefer the texture of my glossy mouse mat than the texture of my desk.
I prefer not having a mouse pad, my desk is as smooth as most pads and it gives me 3 times the mousing area.
I can also move the mouse in front of the keyboard for when I'm too lazy to reach the extra foot =P Although in all serious it just requires little movements of the wrist rather than full arm movement that is required when its further away.
With that said I wouldn't mind one of those ultrasmooth but expensive mouse pads.

yes, get get a Razer copperhead mouse and tell me the Razer Xactmat mouse pad doesn't help it's performance

Having a mouse pad helps to keep the clutter (mainly postit notes) on my desk away from my 'mousing area'

My mousepad has one of those cushiony wrist-rests, and I couldn't do without it.
