Do I need to remind you that America started out as a nation of unwanted immigrants? The poor and the persecuted looking people who were willing to give anything for a better life are the only reason this nation is what is today.
uh huh, but they came with the intent to be a part of this society, not a thorn in the side. They took that pledge of allegiance with great honor and pride. Illegals do not and will not. They know they can get a free ride here and so they come.
Some do, certainly. Some don't. It's not a cut and dry matter. Let's face it, illegals do many of the dirty jobs that no "true American" would ever think of doing. Like it or not, they play a vital role in our society and our economy.
Now, I'm not saying we shouldn't think seriously about immigration reform. Today's system is far from ideal, in my opinion. What I am saying is that the solution isn't as simple as building a fence around the US and never letting other people/races/cultures in. I love the beautiful mess that is my nation's culture. You can keep your cultural purity.
To say that they contribute to society is beyond ignorant. Open your eyes and look around. They are milking this country every which way, they get free health care, they "borrow" other peoples ssn's to get welfare and they don't pay taxes because they're ILLEGAL and that would give them away.
I'm not saying the fence will work either, but a strong force on the borders, both north and south, must be instilled. How do you think the Trade Towers pilots got in this country? Through the unprotected, open borders!!
Are you sure about that? Here's what one of the 9/11 Commission's reports has to say on the subject:
"As we know from the sizable illegal traffic across our land borders, a terrorist could attempt to bypass legal procedures and enter the United States surreptitiously. None of the 9/11 attackers entered or tried to enter our country this way."
Do you watch CNN? Because the so called 9/11 commissions report was jaded. I guess it's true. It's all Bush's fault, right? And you call yourself a Libertarian? BAH!
hnightster: Read a bit more carefully. I never called myself a libertarian. I actually called myself "something akin to a libertarian". :D Generally, broad labels don't seem to fit me very well. I'm not exactly what you'd call an easily categorized person. In fact, I'm kind of odd. :D
Also, Pantalonesdemuerto has a good point. There are really three issue here (maintaining language, maintaining borders, and maintaining culture). It might be interested if you split them into three separate claims. You might find that people strongly agree with some parts of what you say, and yet strongly disagree with other parts of it.
Point taken Jonathan. I didn't mean to "categorize" you. But, my original claim states just that. I will graciously agree to disagree on these matters. Pantalonesdemuerto I mean no disrespect, just how I feel. Sometimes I have trouble writing my thoughts. Maybe this is one of those times.
'Tis cool. No offense taken from or intended for you.
Anyway, if we all agreed about everything, life might be kind of boring. That's one the reasons I like Jyte: it's one of the few places I've found when people can have a discussion about deep-seated issues without things turning into a pissing contest.
So, now that I've broken the ice, I guess you all know what side I fly my flag on. By the way, as if you couldn't tell I'm new to this site. What are the benefits of joining a group and any thoughts on which one, or two might suit me?
By the way, here's a small hint about using Jyte. When you make a claim about yourself, you should put your OpenID in the title instead of your name. That way, it'll be linked to your profile page, and it will automatically update if you ever change your display name.
In other words, the claim you just made would be "https://me.yahoo.com/hnightster digs David Letterman", not "hnightster digs David Letterman".
Also, since no one's voted on that claim yet, you can use to "retract claim" link to change and republish it.
You're quite welcome. I hope I'm not coming across as too nitpicky. It's just that many people won't vote on a personal claim that doesn't use the author's OpenID. You see, the Jyte software doesn't let you retract a claim once someone has voted or commented on it.
Its clear from the comments that by 'our country' you mean the USA, however, since this is not stated in the claim most people will substitute their own country when evaluating the truth. Better to state what you mean.
By the way, US cultural colonialism is one of the most widespread and destructive forms of cultural invasion in the world today.
Secondly, cultures continuously grow and evolve. Trying to freeze a culture in time is one sure way to kill it.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again, but the only numbers I've run into w/r/t the amount of money illegals pay in taxes vs. the amount of public funds they consume in services shows conclusively that they pay much more in to our system than they get out. The study in question was in Oregon, if anyone's interested, I can dig it up again.
A fake id (to get a job) will get you paying taxes, but not free healthcare.
I dunno where this idiotic notion that illegals are stealing our tax moneys comes from. It is neither supported by the numbers or common sense.
What can I do? It's a governmental problem, that needs a government to resolve. I signed a petition in an effort to stop this government from giving social security to the illegals. What have you done, or do you even care?

From what?
OH GOD, DIVERSITY! HERE IT COMES!!
Re "maintaining language":
HA!
No, not diversity. The illegals are killing our culture. So, by maintaining language, borders, and culture we save OUR country.
Do I need to remind you that America started out as a nation of unwanted immigrants? The poor and the persecuted looking people who were willing to give anything for a better life are the only reason this nation is what is today.

Borders, maybe. But what's so important about the language?
Should I change my name to Pants of Death?
Do you watch CNN? Because the so called 9/11 commissions report was jaded. I guess it's true. It's all Bush's fault, right? And you call yourself a Libertarian? BAH!
Who said it was Bush's fault?
The language part pertains to business. Majority of business in this country is done in English. Would you disagree?
No one said it was his fault, I was just reading ahead. I could feel it coming.

I had a good point? Oh. My. God. The first time! Victory lap!
Now now, keep your pants on…
ha-HA!

Don't worry about it. I don't know why, but I think you're going to be fun.

Welcome to Jyte!
To be sincere, groups are mostly ignored by the current active Jyte community. It currently stands as showing a group identity.
You can learn more here about groups.
Enjoy your stay.
Thanks Rael, I will check out the link.

I appreciate the help, not too many people would do that.

America has no culture.

Then explain to me why the Senate has voted to allow "illegals" access to MY social security benefits? I mean, if in fact they are "contributing!"
By the way, thanks Felix for the hint.
I understand where you coming from hnightster, see one of my claims: http://jyte.com/cl/borders-language-and-culture-are-what-define-a-country
Nice to know that someone out there understands.
What are you doing in real life to combat alien culture invasions?

I'm just curious.
