no, no, no. There were many previous technologies or events that led to DIY - farming, trade and the Crusades to name but three. Ideas flowed between people even before the advent of books.
Yes, but the advent of greater access to more, less expensive books opened the DIY without a teacher revolution. People who authored books at this time could influence or train those they never knew and would never meet, very much as it is online today. I suppose the positive boost to asynchronicity and information availability may have made the difference. Another, simultaneous event, the push of the Protestants to teach everyone to read, not just the priest class, worked hand in glove with the advent of the Gutenberg press to encourage this information transfer revolution.
