I think that in the absence of religion, people would still find ways to organize themselves to kill each other.
The article does point out one very consistent truth. People don't listen well when they are told from the beginning that they are wrong.
Islam is not a religion which advocates violence. These jihadists are just very persuasive nutjobs, that's all. If they didn't have religion, they would find some other excuse to kill.
