There are a lot of generalizations I could make comparing the two, but I think that what American animation lacks most is subtle emotion; there's too much exaggeration, as if the animators don't trust their audience to understand more than two or three different facial expressions. (A lot of anime falls in this category, too, but it isn't such a universally defining characteristic.)

Not necessarily, but as a whole I believe so, yes.
I agree that a lot of anime is quite similar although If you look hard you can find quite a bit of anime that falls outside the norm.

Japanese anime is in a different category from American animation.I disagree with you D'A. I think they are quite related. I don't believe we are comparing apples with oranges, but your free to believe so.
