Jyte totally screwed up the tags on this claim. I tagged it with, among other things, "where we're going, we don't need roads" (with single quotes inside double quotes). The preview displayed the correct tag, but when posted, the tag was all messed up (because Jyte apparently replaced my double quotes with singles without me noticing).
@ David: there are virtual reality-esque set-ups for certain things. I played a virtual reality version of Doom 3 for a few minutes at ACon, and it was quite entertaining (just insanely expensive). It was $3000 to buy the stuff, and it only worked on the one game. Nobody bought a set.
The problem with the current stage of virtual reality is that it is too expensive for the average person to buy; and, because of this inablility to purchase, virtual reality gets written off as science fiction instead of a plausible idea that could be available for an affordable price in ten-twenty years. Or less.
I looked into it a while back. This OLED looks the most promising (eMagin visor), and with Sony releasing monitors and tv's based on it this year perhaps it will push the visor market.
I foresee within 10 years visors with HD resolution no bigger than sunglasses plugging into cell phone sized (or maybe your cell phone) devices and playing the video directly from it. The technology is there to do it just not a big enough market to bring the price to something reasonable. I think this will be the future simply because it will be more efficient and save tremendously on power consumption vs a tv.

I realize that it's 5 months late, and you probably already know by now, but you can change your tags.
O, and flying cars will be available for civilians in 2009.

When I claimed this, it wasn't possible to change tags after posting a claim. :P
And what about virtual reality? Where the hell is that?
We got robbed.

If you combine that with what's happening with Sprint/Google and Wimax technology, I think the next 10 years are going to be crazier than the last 10.
High time, indeed: punster.
It's high time we had flying dope connections.
My connection is usually flying.
And shuttle off, hopefully.
