In the example, it was easy to direct the comment, and Nic was not engaged heavily elsewhere in the thread, but often this is the case, and a numbering system would help prevent misunderstandings. Also, any missing numbers would allow one to detect the invisible workings of the ignored, and thus be less confused by one-sided conversations.
It's not like I'll die if this doesn't happen though :p

it would also help with deleted comments, both in detection and clarity after the fact.
btw, i've been tagging suggestions "user interface, feature request" but YTMV.
And don't forget to tag "done" eventually, I suspect this may be taken care of pretty quickly...
Here it is, 2 months later and it still isn't done. I don't think we'll ever see this.
