I did, admittedly, think Gore was going to clearly win, but it wasn't because of Bush that I thought that. I just thought that given the economic trends, the liberalizing social environment, and the moderate nature of Gore, that the Dem's had a very strong chance.
However, I did have this thought in 2008. McCain? A worse selection than Dole in 96. The neocons are taking over and abandoning the base. I don't think they have a chance in hell.
It's rather hard to alienate a base that fails to realize that the common guy they're voting for is hideously wealthy and hasn't done the honest hard labor they think he has.

I remember being relieved that McCain didn't get the nomination, because I thought he had a much better chance of winning than Bush did.
All I thought was 'and the average voter thinks this fucker is just another guy?'
