John Patrick writes,

Newton believed that “this most beautiful system of the sun, the planets and comets, could only proceed from the counsel and dominion of an intelligent and powerful being.” Newton derived two foundation ideas from the Christian beliefs implicit in this quotation; that the world was rational because God was rational and that the world was contingent, that is dependant, upon God but distinct from him and therefore capable of having many characteristics which can only be known by experiment. These two thoughts were necessary for the inductive reasoning process, which was beginning to be applied by scientists in Newton’s time.
