I think it's supposed to mean that if a hypocrite can stand between you and God, then you are already so far from him, that even a hypocrite is closer.

Its a trick question. God doesn't exist so neither of them is closer to god.

Unless the hypocrite is just as far from god. Not knowing which hypocrite it is, there is no reason to think it is true.
