I suspect the top crime in Portland is cyclist not following the laws. I see cyclists breaking the law basically every time I go out for more than 15 minutes.
a) Being unfeeling, which is just a bit of a callous way to be w/r/t someone else's suffering, or
b) Actively feeling good that someone else suffered at your hand, which is even more concerning. When we lose sight of the humanity of others, bad things happen.
Beeing unfeeling isn't all bad... I could have concern for someone while I pry them out from under my vehicle while not feeling bad that they're there.
It's the same as the kid and the stove... I feel bad that you burnt yourself but I'm not sorry because I'll bet you'll think twice before sticking your hand back up there.

The alternatives (as I see them) are:
a) Being unfeeling, which is just a bit of a callous way to be w/r/t someone else's suffering, or
b) Actively feeling good that someone else suffered at your hand, which is even more concerning. When we lose sight of the humanity of others, bad things happen.
I can understand the frustration though.
