I think there's a difference between putting something in a "safe place" and putting something in a place you won't forget it. For example, if I want to take something to work the next day I put it on top of my keys. If I am hiding money I might try to find a safe place that is out of sight and non-intuitive. I would agree that I tend to forget about my safe places, but I don't think this claim is about that.
in my social group, "safe placing" is an idiom for putting something someplace that you thought of a as a "nice safe place i couldn't forget" -- which is, of course, often forgotten.
this si not to be confused with hiding things.
I thought this was a fairly common idiom, but perhaps it isn't.
As the "claimant," I thought I should give some guidance on the issue. I believe my intent is somewhere between, Wyscy a Go Go and Rachel. I do have a place that I keep my checkbooks and stuff and I do not lose those.
Here are some examples. I was given a $50 gift card, I placed it in a "place so that I would not lose it" and have not seen it since. I was looking through a drawer one day and found a check from my parents for my birthday three years earlier.
I feel that these are examples of things that are in between "something to work the next day I put it on top of my keys" and "I might try to find a safe place that is out of sight and non-intuitive" (i.e. putting my checkbook in my mayo jar).

I try to remember not to safe place things, but sometimes forget and stupidly do so.

Hmm, a fair distinction. I read this as a description of safe placing. I'd like to know the intent of the claimant.

Ah yes, that sounds like a classic case of safe placing your gift card.
