Nothing beats voice for rapidly conveying information, and it's also leagues better if the discussion has any emotional content.
However, voice is also much more disruptive to whatever else you were doing before, as well as more obtrusive to others around you. In my book, that makes texting far better for most conversations.
I actually don't like speaking on the phone; I get all awkward. I like using the phone to quickly and efficiently arrange to meet .... at which time I will happily blabber away for hours if you so wish.
As long as it is not a sustained conversation, and just a one-off question or informational thing, SMS >>>>>>>> Voice, for all the same reasons as Chronos layed out.
