It's grown on me over the years, mostly because I started appreciating wasabi.

My original impression was that, eaten without wasabi, sushi tasted like rice, and eaten with wasabi, it tasted like wasabi.

Actually, that's still pretty much true, now that I think about it. For me, it's mostly just an excuse to eat lots of soy sauce and wasabi. (Probably explains why inari-zushi is my favorite. Less complexity + convenient pouch = more soy.)
