My interpretation is that it's a reference to Monty Python's "Dead Parrot" sketch. "If you hadn't nailed him to the perch he'd be pushing up the daisies!" So I think of it as a reference to people that try to keep Monty Python sketches relevant / funny after they're past their prime. I find a lot of them still funny, but not all of them. Let the dead ones die.
