This came at the perfect moment for me. Two weeks ago, I started looking for a free alternative to my IMAP provider which I grew unhappy with (without improving anything significant, they raised year subscription fee) to switch to before my subscription expires.
As for GMail - great and bold move from Google.
IMAP support is still incomplete and speed could be better but we're getting there. I wonder how will they make up for the lost revenues of text ads that are now circumvented when using IMAP. Will they offer a faster, prioritized access to paying customers or will somehow embed text ads into your HTML/plaintext emails?
Anyone has a tip on how to import messages into GMail, while maintaining timestamps and other email headers? I'd like to do this with my Sent folder.
