Text adventures (nowadays known as interactive fiction) were a big thing in the 80's. Infocom was the leading player in the field. Many games like Trinity, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and Sorcerer defined the genre.

Actually, I played it on a PDP 11/34 when it was called DUNGEON
