It's o-five-hundred, civvy.
The difficulty in subtracting 12 is less important than removing the confusion and extra time involved saying AM and PM every time.
I suggest you tag this 24 hour clock or something similar. I've been chided for referring to it as "military time" when apparently there are areas in Europe where it is simply considered how you tell time and it has nothing to do with the military.
I don't speak in hundreds, but I do do 24 hour time. Now, for instance, it's 17:26 (read: seventeen, twenty-seven) in my head.
I think military time/24 hour time is kinda sexy.
And 5am wouldn't be pronounced 'five hundred' in the military. It's " Oh five hundred "
'O' is said for anything less than 10am.
