I tend to figure out a rough script ahead of time, and if the conversation deviates from this script I tend to try to get off the phone as soon as possible.
Several minutes later, when I've recovered, I often think of things that might have been a good idea to say instead...
Much prefer face-to-face. I think my difficulty with telephones is to do with the lack of visual clues from the other party. Although I'm not sure that my videophone performance would be much better, now I come to think of it.
Ryan's first sentence explains me to a T. Hate doing it, but not so bad when it happens. I avoid the phone like a plague. But I love public speaking. :P Go figure.
me too! Sometimes i find myself pacing up and down getting up the courage to phone someone - even friends!
Its the silent pauses that get me. When you're on the phone there's no distractions for either of you if the conversation goes dead. Its embarrasing. (MSN etc dont have this problem.. a conversation can stop at any time for any period and then resume, which is great - totally releives the pressure)

LOL! Thought I was the only one
Possibly my related claim is another reason for the trouble? :-)

I have phone anxiety and hate talking on the phone, but I'm usually okay once I'm actually doing it. Same thing happens with public speaking.

The up side is that my mobile bill is tiny :)
Oh, Rorek...
It's EXACTLY the same with me.
I tend to be fairly (athough not as much) like it in face-to-face conversations too.
I am extremely awkward on the telephone, too. They have gotten a lot smaller, and I almost always fall off. -LD
I thought I was alone in my phone phobia. Maybe we should start a support group. :P
I'm much better at improvising when I receive a call.
Madame DA Kara: "Maybe we should start a support group."
Can you say "conference call"? :-)
Heck yeah! I absolutely hate talking on the phone. I'd much rather chat with someone face-to-face, by email, by IM, or even by text message.
I am slightly phone-phobic, mostly because my phone competency seems to be random. Now that's scary.
I'm always told by my friends that I sound way too formal and serious on the phone. It's hard to talk frankly to a reciever, I guess.
I know the fashion is for smaller and smaller phones, but maybe you should try a bigger one, Choom.
