Honolulu in particular is overrated; the rest of Oahu that I've seen (away from the city) is pretty nice. Waikiki beach is just a beach, with nothing in particular to recommend it except the view of Diamond Head (marred by the encroachment of urban development) and proximity to a lot of hotels. If you aren't impressed by mai tais and cheap souvenirs, there's really not much to see. The International Marketplace is kind of interesting, but the Portland Saturday Market is better (being a weekend affair it has more actual artists selling their art and less full-time minimum wage vendors selling cheap stuff made in China) and I don't have to fly a quarter of the way around the world to see it.
Well I have never been to Hawaii before but I have always wanted to visit. I have seen pictures and it is so gorgeous... its hard for me to believe that it could be over rated.
