Happy National Hug Day.

By 10 Rachel on March 18, 2007

I know that it isn't a holiday for most of you, nor part of your nation's tradition to celebrate it today, but I figured I'd share my holidays with all of you.

As soon as I saw the claim, I knew who made it.

Just because of my doctrine about hugs? Or were there other things? It's hard for me to know what impressions people get of me, because they only see facets, and I get so many different descriptions depending on how they know me and what they primarily see me do (argue, teach, help, support people, listen and keep secrets, require lots of medical care, absorb academic info, etc.)

Primarily because of the hug doctrine. But while I know that all I know of you (or any other jyter) is itsy-bitsy facets/impressions, after a while they do start providing a 'shape'.

It's like mathematics (of course, I think everything is like mathematics) -- you often develop a feel for the shape of a solution (or problem) long, long before you can fully express it.

Mostly intuition, but I rely pretty heavily on mine.

Oh certainly, I fully agree. But the shape people have of me varies based on how they know me.

This was quite amusing when someone who only knew me socially, but whom I chatted with online regularly was present when someone came to me for help in my position as an IRC Oper/CSop of the network. He'd simply never seen me in that capicity. Things like that can happen the other way arpund, when people who only know me in official settings see me in relaxed ones. Or various other things. So, it's interesting to see what shape I am forming in a particular place.

It is representative of who I am, but which bits pop out and which are pushed back will vary. As I'm sure is true for others.

Thanks for sharing hug day with me. I feel a bit sad that nobody else in my vicinity was celebrating it, so I wasn't able to fully partake in what I assume the standard rituals of the day involve.

Also, could we maybe make it 'international hug day'? I'd like to avoid sectarianism if possible.

(sorry, my comment ended up on the wrong claim, not sure how that happened)

kybernetikos... I'm afraid it is national. You can get some info from Wikipedia on National Hugging Day, invented by the same man who brought us National Whiner's Day (Dec 26).

However, I feel people should feel free to share in the traditions and cultures of other nations. I feel this quite strongly, and have created 365 nations to each have a National Hug Day (although one only has it every 4 years) to supplement the actual one. Today it is Nation 19's National Hug Day.

I suggest you simply let others around you know and consider celebrating it anyway.

Had I invented it, I'd have made it international, but it was introduced to me as national, so national I kept it.
