I think it should be "Shame is to the soul, as pain is to the body." Guilt is the logical knowledge that one did the deed. However, shame is how badly one feels spiritually about doing the deed. Shame cause one to separates oneself from God, because of the feelings of unworthiness. Hell from the ancient Greek means "a separation from God (self imposed)."

Well, I suppose Palin could be compared to guilt.
But I'm guessing the two things have vastly different effects on the body.
