Guatama Buddha was either a liar, a lunatic, or he truly found the path to communion with God, and his way should be followed by those who seek to escape from suffering and achieve Nirvana
Depends how you define God.... all things are an illusion, and yet we exist -- our sense of individuality is an illusion too, so we must all be part of one overriding self!!
Besides, I believe he told people not to blindly follow anyone, not even him. If people that want to escape from the perpetual possibility of unhappiness, then they ought to follow the 'way' that they think is best, which may or may not be the way suggested by the gautama buddha.

If he did say anything about a god, it was that there isn't one.

I think of a god as being some sort of agent of intelligent control on the universe as seen by humans.
