Not in the sense of some supernatural grandpa kicking the bucket, but in the idea that the immanence, presence and consideration of the ultimate / divine has ceased to be relevantly included in both the average person's daily life AND in the theories and philosophies of the intellectual class.

Or still being assembled
It all seems to be worship of the worship these days... Let's think "Small Gods" by Terry Pratchet. People get so caught up in rituals and all the mumbo jumbo that comes with it that they forget why they were really even there. Nobody really believes, they just go to church and say they believe so they don't get in trouble.
..and did you really have to go THERE Xavier?
Just because your faith in God is dead, doesn't mean God is dead.
Note: I didn't mention my own faith in god. Or god's literal mortality. Only that the /concept/ of god has become largely irrelevant to *most people's* daily lives and decision making and is clearly not a critical part of science or most philosophy.
Will the religious people on this thread stop taking this personally and actually address the claim AS WRITTEN?
When hell freezes over. Not even your snark can stop "teh interwebs effect".
You would have to believe that God exists to believe that it died.
Janine - not per this claim, which is more about sociopolitics than religion
Voted against b/c of the "most people" clause. Don't confuse a function with its derivative.
I believe nietzsche's quote was refering to the irrelavancy of God to modern society. If we take a look at America today we can see that is not the case.
the consideration of the concept of something larger than one's self is an eternal human quality.
if god is irrelevant then how come we have a Christian in office
and holy wars going on
Plus a large amount of churches
god isnt dead
IMHO, Nietzsche didn't mean to say that God's name would disappear from politics and propaganda.
But how many people actually try to live their daily lives in recognition / awareness / obedience to God's message? In the middle ages all of society and everybody's lives were structured around faith and their notion of God's plan for society.
Now? People might go to church on Sunday and use the Bible to justify their prejudices - but the heart of the world is capitalist, materialist and individualist.
IMHO, what Nietzsche meant was that "faith and devotion to God, His Laws and Plan, has ceased to act as a core organizing principle for society, philosophy and most people's daily lives."
1. “‘I served the old god until his last hour. But now I am retired, without a master, and not yet free, nor ever cheerful except in my memories. That is why I climbed these mountains, that I might again have a festival at last, as is fitting for an old pope and church father—for behold, I am the last pope—a festival of pious memories and divine services. But now he himself is dead, the most pious man, that saint in the forest who constantly praised his god with singing and humming. I did not find him when I found his cave; but there were two wolves inside, howling over his death, for all animals loved him. So I ran away. Had I then come to these woods and mountains in vain? Then my heart decided that I should seek another man, the most pious of all those who do not believe in God—that I should seek Zarathustra’” (259-260)!
I'm a Christian and I agree with what XavierAM says "in the idea that the immanence, presence and consideration of the ultimate / divine has ceased to be relevantly included in both the average person's daily life AND in the theories and philosophies of the intellectual class."
This is true because if you look at politics, education, and philosophy. God is dead to people’s thoughts and actions because if the people took seriously God's words (the bible) then America for example would be a total different country. Instead of trying to stop terrorism the government would be trying harder to stop the deeper issues. When Jesus was talking to the leaders in his day he called them hypocrites listen to these verses in Matthew 23:25 and 26 " Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self indulgence. You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and plate, that the outside also may be clean. Does any one see? It is the same for are leaders there trying to attack terrorism instead of attacking greed and self-indulgence and I'll add racial bitterness. The thing is how can you beat self indulgence (which leads to greed, jealousy, verbal fighting, physical assault and eventual murder) it is human nature to want the best for your self instead of like Jesus you want the best for those that hate you (that’s one reason I believe he is God). If God were alive in education it would be allot different instead of children competing to do the best they can for themselves, it would be children doing the best they can for others in the name of God. If God was alive in Philosophy it wouldn't exists because people wouldn't rely on mans silly little thoughts about how to live life and turn to the word of God they would care more about living right in Gods then being right in there own eyes. You know what this world needs people that will wash other peoples feet like Jesus in John 13:3-5.
Whitespace, Matthew my boy. Whitespace. Makes your comments much easier to read. Also makes it clearer where your quote begins.
Also, please link to your resources, rather than copy pasting them, if they're longer than a paragraph.
I disagree on the basis that "God is alive" within the hearts of those that believe. Whether the rest of us believe or not, does not make him dead.
rest in peace my lord..
God keeps getting people killed. Seems pretty alive to me.
