Is this how you feel?
This is a quote from Michelle Obama. It's gotten a lot of negative press from the Hannity/Ingraham wing of the Republican noise machine. It seems to me that they are going after her wording in order to redefine her intent.
If you agree with the general intent, but not the wording, how would you have worded this better?

Based on intent rather than wording, I couldn't agree more. This is this first time I have voted in a primary where I was voting for a candidate. I wasn't choosing the best of a sorry lot - I was choosing a candidate I can believe in.
Mr. Obama is farther to the left than I would like, but I can overlook that. It feels to me like America will be taking a very positive step forward if we elect him. I haven't felt that way in any other election.
i would be proud if my husband ran things, because its a bit shit at the moment.
This is the first time in several years that I have ~hope~ that my fellow citizens may be ready to start climbing out of the empty oil shaft that the Bush administration pushed us down.
I am a long way from being proud at this moment, but I'm hopeful. -LD
LD, He's given us the shaft alright. Quite a few times.

Is it disrespectful to the intention of this claim to mention what a hottie Michelle Obama is?
I mean 'first lady': Bill Clinton or Michelle Obama. You decide.
I'm just not particularly proud of my country at the moment. Sure, we have someone who isn't obviously a [censored for extreme profanity] running for office, and that's good. I'll be proud if he gets there and actually manages to do something worthwhile.
I'm with Ben.
Obama excites leftists with shallow college rhetoric and sweeps Hillary off the map (for now) but her "super delegates" will steal his victory at the convention! Seriously, has Obama written anything substantial? Has he written a law that has been passed? I can't remember any of his speeches, can you? It's like I want to like him, but I dont think there is a whole lot of substance there.
To be fair, I think you could say the same (lacking in substance) of any of the frontrunners. Clinton has what, 8 years in the senate? That isn't exactly a long time. McCain on the other hand, has a bit of experience behind him. Mind you, that experience is that of being a running dog for what was easily the most corrupt administration in my lifetime. The man is a toady, lacking any initiative or competence of his own.
Wait, I take it back. McCain has proven himself capable of making socialized health insurance working. Of course, the only thing he's proven himself capable of doing is something he'll never do in office.
I think that people accept too much spin.
I like Obama, he seems to have hope and is less jaded. He does not accept the limits of change that is possible (yet). I feel the population is not ready yet. The voters public response and private response are too divergent. Fear is still too strong in people.
As for the question at hand. My sentence would be
"For the first time in my life, I am really excited about what's possible for our country's political and social future."
I think the quote is perfectly fine. Hell, I have yet to be really proud of my country.
Patrick..'The man was a professor of constitutional law at the University of Chicago'. Having been a teacher at a college hardly makes anyone feel better about him, or anyone, being Commander-in-chief, does it?
What does that line even mean? You're trying to express two ideas with one sentence.
Please consider claiming something along the lines of "I would be comforted to know that our commander in chief was a professor of constitutional law."
I suspect you'd be surprised how many people do think that the constitution is important, and want a CiC who understands it, especially after the way the current administration ignored it.

I would be comforted to know that our commander in chief was a professor of constitutional lawDamm right BB you said it all for me!
I agree on the claim because yes I AM proud of Australia, but No i'm not particularly proud of the government thats been running it in the past years, I hope that the Labour Party will do a better job.
I'm pleased you're happy with your choice, Ralph. I do hope the man will get in and hope that things will change.
