Encouraging the author to refine his claim is a good reason to read the claim pedantically.

I like claims that precisely and independently express their ideas. They are meaty and present a distinct meaning. A claim that has to be read liberally to be sensible is not as good, if only because the meaning of votes is less clear. Consequently, I generally vote with a strict (read "pedantic") construction of a claim's wording as a gentle hint[1] to refine the claim.
