Once you get used to Emacs it's the most natural thing. You can live in emacs and never have to leave it to do anything else. Vi's insert & edit modes are a huge pain.
Comparing these two editors (or better: editing tools) is probably a sign of misunderstanding of both. Instead of talking so much about *learning curve* and things like that: choose the one you *like* best. You cannot compare products which solve the two entirely different editing questions in genius ways.

I don't like either of them!
vi rules :wq!
Emacs has great features, but despite using it for years I haven't the foggiest idea how to operate them.
I use vim anyway…

Anything is better than vi. Text editors should not require a manual.
They both suck.
*ducks*
Right, they both really suck!

Maybe as an operating system, but the text editor sucks.
Emacs takes about 6 months to get the hang of, but then you'll never go back to another editor again.

You can also live in your car and never have to leave it. But that would be just as silly.

It is more of matter of opinion and what uses in what cases you consider better for. I prefer vi, but some people prefer emacs and that is OK.
