the mini serries was, in my opinion, fantastic. i agree about the book, but that's probably because I was never able to get past the first 100 pages of any of his books. I have yet to see the original film, but this has mostly to do with everyone who I know who has seen it says that it is utter crap, and this includes the few people who's opinion I absolutely trust when it comes to film.
I read the first novel three times and will probably read it again. The first movie was fine until they mucked it up with giving the Fremen sound weapons instead of demonstrating that they were simply better fighters. But themes about fanaticism and megalomania were never more appropriate for today's times.
The miniseries was far superior to the Lynch movie.
That said, though, I feel rather ambivalent about the series itself. I wouldn't go so far as to say it sucked, but I can't bring myself to click "disagree" either.
I thought the David Lynch movie was much, much better than the miniseries. The miniseries got all the 'facts' right, but I had no feeling of anything involving religious experience or the stretching of consciousness approaching divinity that I feel the David Lynch movie achieved quite well.
In reading Frank Herbert's works in general, it is clear that those themes are the absolutely most important themes as they show up time and time again in all of his novels. The miniseries killed that, and IMHO was a horrible soulless translation of his work.

We have the miniseries on tape, if you're interested, by the way.
The original was great. I loved it.
I really like the book, too.
I was confused and hit agree by accident.
You forgot to include "To Tame A Land" in the list of derived works.
How did I end up disagreeing with this.
I thought it was great when I first read the series.
and yes, the movie could have been better.
Perhaps if they made it with neutec
While I will agree that "Dune" (the first book) was rather dry, the series as a whole was great.
David Lynch's movie was an abomination however. (just like Alia)

The book is so dry I never finished it in many attempts to read it. No, I don't care if it won an award.
almost done reading #6, must... finish... series...
I say it was all great except the David Lynch movie which was dreadful, but it's definitely not for everyone.
