Heh. When I saw this claim, I thought to myself "I use Dovecot... don't I?" and I had to log into my mail server to find out.
And I think that's the best sort of software... the kind of software that gets out of your way and lets you get things done, so that you almost forget that it's there. Thumbs up to Dovecot. :)
(On the other hand, back when I was running UW-IMAPD, I was well aware of that because it would constantly get up in my face.)
Hopefully, they'll iron out the config file format and freeze it by the 1.0 final release. For a while, I was dreading each time Debian testing had a new Dovecot update, because I'd have to hand-merge the new config file with my customizations.
As far as reliability and headaches go, though, Dovecot has been the best IMAP server I've ever used.
What I mean is that existing IMAP servers *were* insane. Either requiring a bizarre setup, an even more mad config than dovecot's or some other strangeness.

Also... it's not totally fucking insane.

Yup, I'll second that. I stomached Courier IMAP for quite a while, but once I discovered Dovecot I never looked back.
Having said that I am about to ditch dovecot and IMAP altogether because I am sick of it.
Maildir and file copying for me from now on.
WTF?
