Even when betting on yourself to win, you could under-perform in a previous game to increase the odds in a later match. It's usually a bad thing to give the participants any motivation to manipulate the outcome.
"Hey Fred"
"Hey Ralph"
"Did you bet on yourself today?"
"Nah, how bout you?"
"Sure did. Bet the house"
"Ok, your turn to win."
"I owe you one, thanks."
Wyscan: Yeah, but what about world records, cash prizes, medals, and so on? They can certainly motivate people to do better in one race at another's expense. Do you think we should eliminate them too?

Why shouldn't they? (I'm not trying to be rude. I honestly can't think of a good reason to disagree.)

The things you mention encourage people to do their best, not under-perform.
