Although familiar with the N. American word 'period' (punctuation), I still find it an odd word in that context.

As with other Americanisms, I hear it on television and see it on the internet all the time but, 'period' for me has connotations of regularity, which sentences obviously don't have.

What do English speaking non-North Americans (Brits?) use instead of "period"?

My understanding is that they call it a "full stop". But I may be misremembering.

( ! ) is an exclamation mark.

Askoxford.com give 'exclamation point' as an alternative American equivalent.

And yes, English speaking non-North Americans (at least among the former territories/dependants of the British Empire) do call it a full stop.
