I've tried it.
You can buy bottles 920oz) of diet coke in any airport in the US at almost any newsstand.
And while it would be messy, I don't believe the explosive force is sufficient to endanger anyone, unless it is at close range and you hit the eyes/ears, etc. it certainly won''t endanger the plane, although it may get people wet.
It doesn't have to endanger the plane or the crew. All you need is a memo that says it does, and mentos scanning hardware becomes tax-deductible

I agree in theory, but I think the claim is overly specific. No airlines should allow Mentos on board because they are nasty, not because they are likely to explode.
